100 Years of Kitchen Design

January 21, 2021 by EuroChef

Kitchen design and function have come a long way since the early 1900s. What was once a hidden space reserved only for cooking, has now become the most important room of the home.

Take a journey with us as we delve into the evolution of kitchen design of the past 100 years and consider where the next 100 will take us.

1910s – 1920s

In the early 1900s kitchens were a secluded space tucked away in the back of the home. Its primary function was solely for preparing and cooking food, dining and entertaining was held in a separate room located off of the kitchen. Refrigerators were known as “iceboxes” and appliances were stripped down with basic functions,  and wood stoves had minimal cooking options with no reliable temperature control features.

1930s – 1940s

During the housing boom that took place post-WWII, there was an increased emphasis on the design of the home and demand for technology in the kitchen. During this era, the kitchen was revolutionized with new refrigeration options that offered increased  storage space and ovens that were integrated with hot plates for stovetop cooking. The idea of the “fitted” kitchen became a popular concept and appliances began to be built-in to the cabinetry for a seamless and organized look.

1950s – 1970s

As innovations in technology and design quickly evolved, the kitchen started to transform into the hub of the home. As new homes were being built, the placement of the kitchen moved from the back of the home to the center and was no longer closed off to dining and living areas. Homeowners were opting for bold design choices, selecting whimsical wallpaper for backsplashes, unique linoleum flooring and the iconic wood-look cabinetry we’ve all come to love. During this time, appliances were also advancing to include added cooking options and features that made meal prep easier.

1980s

“Bigger is better” was a major theme of the 1980s and of course kitchens followed this movement. A trend for larger homes added square footage in the kitchen allowing for more countertop space, larger eating nooks and room for entertaining. With all this extra space, islands and peninsulas quickly became a staple in kitchen design. This provided the opportunity for additional seating and multi-functional use of the kitchen which allowed families to spend more time together in this space.

The addition of multiple cooking appliances was also popular during the late 1980s. Wall ovens paired with cooktops or kitchen ranges provided homeowners the option to cook more than one dish at a time, reducing the time it took to cook a meal.

1990s – 2010s

By the mid-1990s, the kitchen had officially been dubbed the heart of the home. The idea of the gourmet kitchen took off during these years with pro-style appliances like Verona Appliances ranges, cooktops, built-ins and ventilation hoods.

Through the late 90s and into the early aughts, luxury details such as granite countertops, tiled flooring, and dark cabinetry brought a polished and modern feel to the center of the home. Stainless steel was the trending finish for all kitchen appliances and accents thanks to its durability and ease of maintenance.

As the age of the internet defined the late 2000s and 2010s, technology was becoming a more prevalent in the home, smart devices were being introduced in the kitchen and the design of appliances was becoming more streamlined for a sleek and futuristic look.

2020 and Beyond

As the role of the home dramatically shifted in 2020, so did the function of the kitchen. Now a home office, classroom, dining room, utility space and so much more, the kitchen serves a much greater purpose.

The need for customization and personalization in this space has become a top priority in the progression of residential design. Verona Appliance’s innovative Designer Range Builder allows homeowners to customize their range by finish, fuel type for a look that fits their personal space and the brand-new Kitchen Suite combines a collection of pro-style appliances to craft a custom design that always looks pulled together.

If your kitchen looks like it belongs in a past era and an update is seriously needed, Verona Appliance offers an extensive catalog of appliances, accessories and tools to transform your space for the modern age.

All of our ranges and hoods are available in a myriad of sizes, finishes, and cooking options to meet the needs of kitchens of all layouts.

We’re excited to see where the future of kitchen design takes us and what’s to come in the next 100 years!

Football Season is here: Host Game-Day like a Pro

September 25, 2019 by EuroChef

Football season has officially kicked off. If you’re hosting Sunday’s game-day celebrations, having a game plan is essential for a successful party. Grab your pen and paper and start drafting your to-do list, Verona Appliances has created a list of hosting and recipe tips that are sure to keep your guests entertained.

Have Ample and Comfortable Seating
Your current seating arrangements might not be able to accommodate a large crowd. Bring in additional seats from other areas of your house. You can also create a comfortable game-viewing environment with throw pillows and floor cushions by placing them in spots where people might take a seat.

Ensure everyone has a Perfect View of the Game
Guests will most likely be in and out of their seats during the game. Arrange your television and furniture in a position where traffic can flow seamlessly without blocking anyone’s view.

Support the Teams
A little decorative detail goes a long way. Score points with football-themed plates and serving trays or napkins, cups and balloons in team colors. Go one step further by transforming your food table into a football field with a green tablecloth.

Provide a Drink Station
Your guests won’t want to miss the game to quench their thirst. Create a drink station in your living room. While beer might be the popular drink of choice, please all of your guests with multiple drink options.

Keep Food Flowing and Hot
Guests always gravitate towards hot food options. Let Verona Appliances take the stress out of prepping your menu. Each Verona Range is equipped with high-performance features that will keep your courses flowing and hot until the last quarter:

  • Burner heads are mounted close to the cooking surface for better heat distribution.

  • European convection ovens are equipped with a third fan element to pre-heat the circulated air in the oven cavity for consistent temperatures and superlative results.
  • Durable and heavy-duty glass doors keep heat and energy in the oven cavity ensuring timely meal prep.

Game-Winning Recipes
The menu is the most important element of a successful party. Be sure to have enough food and an array of options to accommodate all of your guest’s taste buds.

5 Ways to Design your Kitchen for Wellness

August 21, 2019 by EuroChef

Your health and wellness shouldn’t be limited to just changing your diet or exercise regimen. Creating a healthy lifestyle can start by rejuvenating the spaces you spend most of your time in, like the kitchen.

Let Verona Appliances help you liven up your kitchen with these 5 wellness tips.

Bring the Outdoors In

Did you know plants are natural mood boosters or that they inspire creativity and purify the air? A great way to incorporate plants in your kitchen is by building an herb or vegetable garden.

Whether you have room for 1 or 5 pots, having year-round access to fresh plants you grow yourself will make cooking even more exciting, tasty, and healthy.

Use Proper Ventilation

Boiling water, grease, and other liquids can easily accumulate on your kitchen surfaces. Range hoods are a great way to reduce excess moisture and grease particles that linger in the air while you cook and prevent mold growth and residue build-up.

Range hoods can also limit the natural carbon monoxide runoff created by burners. Verona Appliances offers two 36” hood options each with powerful multi-speed fans, LED lights and additional features.

Say Goodbye to Plastic

As we grow more aware of where our food comes from it’s just as important to be mindful of how we store it.

By switching from plastic to glass containers you can reduce your carbon footprint, stop airborne germ and smell absorption into your food, and prevent chemicals from leaching into your meals if using a microwave for reheating.

Limit Microwave Use

Its no secret, microwaves are not the safest option for cooking and heating food. Steamers are excellent alternatives. The Chefs Pak by Verona Appliances features a stovetop steamer that sits on top of the included griddle and perfectly cooks vegetables and fish as well as easily reheats leftovers.

Try Chemical-Free Cleaning

If you clean your countertops and appliances with harsh chemicals there’s a good chance they will end up contaminating your food. Try incorporating surfaces and appliances that can be cleaned organically.

All Verona Appliance range cavities are built with an easy-clean enamel, which allows for simple and chemical-free cleaning. The interior of all ranges can be cleaned with a water, lemon, and vinegar solution, while the glass in the oven doors can easily be removed and wiped down with soap and water in the sink.

Verona Appliances Spotlighted in a One of A Kind Denver Kitchen

June 27, 2019 by EuroChef

It’s no secret that the Denver housing marketing has been shining over the last couple of years. Young homebuyers moving to the mile high city are greeted with earth tones and mountain-inspired décor reminiscent of the city’s surroundings. But when it comes to flipping homes in the Denver area, Wendy Crist and the team at The Happening Home divert away from this cookie-cutter style, opting for the Hygge ambiance of cozy comfort that turns ordinary houses into dream homes for those entering the market.

In one of their most recent projects, The Happening Home team took an outdated, non-functional kitchen from one of Denver’s most desirable neighborhoods and transformed it into a modern farmhouse inspired space with the help of Verona Appliances. Although the kitchen had good bones, it was tired looking and lacking much needed storage space.

“We added lots of charm and character to this home,” explains Wendy “Some of our favorite features are the gourmet kitchen, shiplap wall and reclaimed wood accents. We wanted this home to feel current, cozy, comfortable, and interesting all at the same time.”

When it came time to choose appliances, the team selected a 36” Stainless Steel Verona Range. The look of the range was perfectly in-line with the style of the renovated kitchen, and the full width storage compartment is perfect for organizing extra baking sheets.

“The way this wall of the kitchen turned out with the Verona range, custom hood, pot filler and open shelving turned out to be my favorite spot in the whole renovation,” says Wendy.

The end result of the renovation was a modern, updated home that is ready for its new family. Thank you Wendy and The Happening Home for sharing your Verona kitchen with us! For even more projects be sure to follow The Happening Home on Facebook and Instagram.

Top Cooking Tips from Around The World

June 1, 2018 by EuroChef

Looking for some fresh new ways to spice up your cooking? Whether you’re looking too add in a healthy alternative or just need some general cooking advice we have the scoop for you. Check out our tips and tricks from our customers, top chefs and celebrities all over the world that will help kick your cooking up a notch.

Keep Tasting It!

“While it seems like such an obvious trick, my mom would always tell me to make sure to try my food to ensure it tastes good. As a chef, it is important to taste everything all the time at every stage of the cooking process.” – Lean Cohen on today.com

Don’t Cry Over Onions

“Put onions in ice water for 10 minutes before cutting them; this prevents them from causing your eyes to water.” – Angel Leon on Style Caster

Be Adventurous

“Don’t be afraid to swap and substitute—have fun in the kitchen! Experiment and share! Make it a fun adventure.” – Lyza Joe on Verona Appliances Facebook

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with a Healthy Twist

“To make your desserts healthier, replace ¾ of the cream that the recipe outlines with whisked egg whites (which you will delicately blend with the remaining amount of cream). It will make your desserts light, airy and exquisite.” – Michael Guerard on Vougue.com

Keep the Skin On Your Potatoes

“The secret behind making a great mash for me personally, is keeping the skins on. The skins protect the potatoes, therefore it doesn’t absorb all that water.” – Gordon Ramsay on Buzzfeed

Use Olive Oil to Prevent Free Radicals

“Use olive oil which is an oil that doesn’t oxidize easily or create free radicals as easily as other oils can.” – Christine Cushing on Setting for Four

Stack Your Pancakes The Right Way

“Piled high, flapjacks will become soggy, as the stack prevents steam from evaporating. You can solve this problem by warming them in a signal layer on baking sheets. To avoid driving out the pancakes, warm them for no more than half an hour. You could also use a two-burner griddle, which will shorten your overall cooking –and warming-time.” –Martha Stewart on MarthaStewart.com

Layer The Flavors

“Try not to add all of the ingredients at once. It does make a difference. Most raw foods have a significant amount of water apart from the flavor components. By treating each component separately, we are better able to manipulate the individual characteristics of the ingredients.” – Tony Nogales on HuffingtonPost.com

Add a Splash of Olive Oil

“Invest in a bottle of high-quality olive oil. Just a small drizzle can really bring out the flavor of pizza, mozzarella, pasta, fish and meat.” – Nancy Silverton on Buzzfeed

Verona Wall Oven Helps Give New Life to a 1972 Airstream

April 12, 2018 by EuroChef

Tiny living doesn’t have to mean sacrificing the things you love. In March 2017, San Diego couple Rachael and Virgil, alongside their rescue pup Jovie, decided to commit to a more simple, intentional living lifestyle by purchasing and renovating a 1972 Airstream Overlander which would eventually become their home.

“We took the tiny home route for reasons most do — to live more simply and efficiently,” says Rachael. “It seems that when this big life change approaches, you start thinking about what follows. For us, with our wedding approaching later that year, we had hopes of getting our finances under control, buying a fixer upper house and having the financial freedom to live without feeling the heavy, stressing pull of our wallets. Looking to meet that goal in a reasonable amount of time, we realized that it would be about a decade away, at least (!!), if we kept on living as we were. That didn’t sit well with either of us.”

Rachael and Virgil purchased their Airstream with its original 1972 interior. Together they gutted it down, fixed the chassis and put in all new insulation, subfloor, electrical and plumbing to make everything fresh and new. When it came time to choose the layout, priority was given to the kitchen/dining space. The couple chose a Verona 24″ Electric 110-volt Wall Oven as their primary cooking appliance.

“We both come from Italian families and love to cook together,” says Rachael. “Surprisingly, when selecting only electric appliances small enough for a trailer, there aren’t very many options. We love the size and design of our cute little Verona oven, and it works GREAT. We were really impressed with the consistency and speed of cooking.”

Inspired by southern coastal vibes, Rachael and Virgil describe their style as “California-minimal.” The Airstream design features a bright, open layout and a visually unique space that is functional for their day to day lives.

“The kitchen was very important to us, and we wanted to give it the space it deserved,” explains Rachael. “In tune with that, we also wanted to have a sizeable table where we could eat our cherished home cooked meals, and with friends if we wanted to”

When asked for her best advice for creating a home by Apartment Therapy Rachael replied, “The advice I’ve lived by is to fill your home with items that speak to you, ones that make you feel something. I’ve appreciated this William Morris quote on a whole new level since living tiny, and I plan to hold onto this methodology in all of our homes to come — ‘Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.'”

Be sure to read Rachael’s house tour feature on Apartment Therapy and follow her on Instagram.
