Verona Helps Combine The Old with the New in a St. Louis Restoration

Verona Appliances has helped aid in the renovation of a severely devastated 1912 home, and bring together the new with the old.

In St. Louis, Missouri Period Restoration, a company specializing in historic restoration, sought out to restore the early 1900s home. “The house was in the same family since the 1950s and was given to one of the kids to whom then let it go. It was in severe disrepair and required a major restoration,” said Randy Renner of Period Restoration.

Before

Before

The goal of the renovation was to preserve many of the older, more historic features of the exterior such as the wood windows, slate/tile roofing and copper work while upgrading the interior elements yet still keeping it consistent with the time period. “Kitchens of course are the main thing everyone cares about so the look we achieved on [the Pershing project] was great,” said Renner. “Subway tile throughout, with a copper hood. Not a lot of wall cabinets (period) and counterparts that would be similar to what was around in the early 1900s.”

The kitchen was completed with 36” Verona Dual Fuel Single Oven Range in Matte Black. Period Restoration prides themselves in keeping all of their projects time period correct, and making sure every detail aligns with that vision. “[We are] very mindful of each houses’ style and architecture when doing a kitchen” said Renner. “Our vision for the kitchen lined up with the looks of the Verona range.”

Thank you, Randy and Period Restoration for sharing your Verona Renovation Story and transformation images.

Mixed Metal Q&A with Interior Designer Christine Donner

_MG_2765One of the most up-and-coming trends on the interior design scene today is the use of mixed metals in appliances and home décor. The mixed metal trend has seen increasing popularity over the last few months, and is expected to make an even bigger impact on the design world in the 2016 year.

Interior designer and specialist Christine Donner from Christine Donner Kitchen Design, Inc. spoke with EuroChef USA about her experiences, as well as the aesthetic value of using mixed metals in kitchen designs.

EuroChef USA: Could you explain what the mixed metal trend is, and what colors are often seen?

Christina Donner: The mixed metal trend adds a layer of interest and dimension to a room.  Combining silver and gold, or chrome and brass, or adding oiled rubbed bronze to existing fixtures will make your kitchen livelier.

Clients often get hung up on choosing one metal for their kitchen – either brushed or polished– like everything should match. But appliances are always a combination of brushed and polished, that element is already in the room. With the new popularity of brushed brass, clients want that look too, but you can’t get an oven in brass – so we find ourselves going with a combination of metals. Relax and pick what you like — just be sure to tell your designer so she makes sure it all works.

EC: How long have you been working with mixed metal designs? Is this a fairly new concept?

CD: For several years, metal trends in jewelry design have been edging towards yellow gold again.  And now you commonly see bracelets and the like with both yellow and white gold, as well as, rose gold. Interpreting this trend into home interiors is fairly new.  It is common for fashion design to be a year or two ahead of interior design.

EC: What do you think has led to the recent popularity of mixed metals?

CD: Home design trends now are increasingly eclectic, and in some cases a bit wild with color and patterns. I think this trend frees people up to mix and match without worry.

By mixing metals, a homeowner can easily update their existing interiors without changing everything. It does lend a fresher look.

EC: What types of homes will benefit from mixed metal appliances? (transitional, contemporary, rustic, etc.)

CD: This can be a universal trend spanning styles, and color palettes. There is a look now for a traditionally designed home to be furnished with very contemporary pieces, and some wild light fixture or art. I think the mixed metal trend is very much a part of that look right now.

EC: Which cabinet, wall and flooring colors are complimentary of mixed metal appliances? (what color should I paint my wall if I want a mixed metal range, or is it more versatile?)

CD: We chose to make the cabinets a very pure white, to brighten the space and not add any other color elements to the mix. The quartzite countertops are very beautiful, Dolce Vita, a blend of white and grays and soft creamy tones. That seemed to pull the mixed metals together.

EC: The Branford Kitchen (images shown within this post) is absolutely beautiful, could you give us some backstory on the design?

CD: This was a maple stain contractor grade kitchen with an island that dominated the space. The kitchen is toward the back of the house, as the living room faces the water. It was dark and crowded. Our task was to bring order and lightness to the space. The room now feels about twice as large, and twice as bright.

We knew the range needed to go on the back wall, directly in the site line from the living room. It needed to be something eye-catching, but it also had work to do. We were concerned with making this kitchen work, with a defined food prep and cooking zone near the range, and a clean up zone nearer the front.

EC: Why did you choose an ILVE in your kitchen design?

CD: The homeowner chose an ILVE not only for its quality, but also because it is a beautiful looking range that certainly draws attention to itself.  We were given a finish sample kit and we played around with it, covering some knobs with tin foil to achieve the mixed metal look we wanted. By mixing metal finishes, the homeowner feels the ILVE is the anchor in the room, from which other design elements were pulled.

Verona Helps Complete An Atlanta Bungalow Renovation

Verona Appliances has helped transform a formally cluttered kitchen into a trendy entertainment destination.

In Atlanta, Georgia Level Team Contracting designed and re-built a 1925 bungalow, which had never before been renovated. When the team first purchased the home, they knew that they were about to take on a very large project. “The house was an absolute mess when we purchased it.  The previous owners were hoarders and it was filthy, it hadn’t been renovated in many decades,” said owner J.R. Torbert of Level Team Contracting.

Before

Before

The goal of the renovation was to create a great house that would be suitable for hosting parties and entertaining guests, since the house is located in a trendy and walk-able area of Atlanta. “On the inside, we designed a more contemporary open layout with traditional finishes.  On the outside, we kept the design details consistent with the neighborhood aesthetic and the original 1920’s construction period.”

The kitchen was completed with 36” Verona Pro-Style Dual Fuel range with an 8” backguard and professional tubular handle. Level Team Contracting prides themselves on being ahead of the curve in design, style and technology. “We chose the Verona because it was a professional 36″ range that looked great and was also affordable. The transformation was amazing and turned into a 1+ million dollar sale.”

Chef Kurt von Kahle talks Induction Cooking with EuroChef

Screen Shot 2015-09-18 at 9.34.05 AMKurt von Kahle, chef and culinary appliance consultant from Kurt’s Kitchen, spoke to EuroChef about one of the hottest technologies for pro chefs – induction cooking. Induction cooking technology was first introduced at the Chicago World Fair in the early 1900s, but hadn’t received much popularity until it was perfected in the year 2000.

Many consumers are unaware of all the great benefits that induction cooking has to offer, so we reached out to Chef Kurt for a Q&A.

Q: Why is induction cooking considered “the hottest new thing” for pro chefs? How could this be applicable for consumers as well?
A: I wouldn’t consider it new for chefs. Many Hotels or off premise small kitchenettes have provided Induction Cooktops for years. In these areas, Ventilation was an issue and in a commercial setting, a fire suppression system was required. Since an Induction top doesn’t produce a heat that can cause fire, it works out well in these environments. Another application is on buffets where the food can be kept in a pan on display simmering over an induction top. This is used in some Whole Food Stores in their prepared food department. In fine dining where there used to be table side flame dishes such as Bananas Foster, the open flame is not allowed anymore so induction has been the go to for safety and consistency.

Q: Do certain recipes work better on induction cooktops than traditional gas or electric ranges? Why?
A: Two of the big selling points for cooktops are High Heat and Low Simmer. Depending on the pan selection, the high heat for searing is exceptional on Induction. Low Simmer can run at a constant instead of a ‘Surging’ effect that typical electric burners provide. Compared to Gas, the cooktop or range top has to offer the highs and lows that are more costly and require more powerful ventilation.

Q: What makes induction a safer choice for consumers?
A: Can’t cause a fire even if you wanted to!

Q: Are induction cooktops still pricey? Are they expensive to fix?
A: Yes but weigh this against a more powerful range top with a great low simmer along with installation of adequate ventilation. Now there are more induction cooktops in the industry, so availability of parts along with training for service people nationally has increased making service less expensive.

Q:For consumers that enjoy wok cooking, how can they get that same even cook they would get with wok rings and round-bottom wok pans?
A: Place a flat bottom wok on the cooktop and cover with a lid for a minute during the heat up period.

Q: Some interviews suggest that the controls and cook settings on induction cooktops can be tricky, do you agree?
A: They are no different than electric glass tops on the market. The biggest issue is for consumers to keep the control area dry, don’t place utensils, towels or hot pans on the the controllers. If your hands are cold, wet or covered with flour or some food it may not allow the controls to see or register your fingers.

Both ILVE and Verona Appliances offer Induction options for consumers. Please visit our links below for more information:
